Your Loved Ones Are Key to Your Weight Loss
You can not lose weight in a vacuum; it can’t be done. You need a team of people to help you achieve your goals or you’ll never make it. Your nearest and dearest, be they housemates or family members, are going to have to help you get there. Below are some tips to get them (and you) on board.
Your nearest and dearest must accept that:
1. Everyone will eat healthier meals. It will make everyone feel better and trim their waistlines, too, if needed. You certainly don’t need to starve your dinner mates, you can serve yourself a smaller portion than the rest. But eating extra veggies is hard to argue with and it’s ridiculous for anyone to make two meals to satisfy everyone.
2. Snack food will be limited and healthy. Pile on the fruits and veggies and rice cakes. Tone down the ice cream, cookies, and candy bars. If they must have junk food, tell them to do it outside of the house at work or school.
3. They need to pitch in and help. You’re going to need more time to exercise. Your peeps are going to have to work with your schedule to make sure you get the time you need. This might mean delegating tasks you normally do, so, if you can afford it, seriously consider hiring a cleaning person. It might make everyone a lot happier and more relaxed.
4. They’ll do it because they love you. When I get my exercise in, all sorts of good things happen for my family. I have more energy, the house is in better order, and I cook great tasting meals. When I’m out of sorts, the house is a mess and we’re ordering take out. We all have a smoother time of it if I get done what I need to get done. Your nearest and dearest are going to have to help you get there. They’ll do it because they want what’s best for you, just like you want what’s best for them.
Here are some things you’re going to have to adjust to:
1. Prioritize yourself. No, you don’t become the Queen of Sheba being fanned by servants and fed grapes, but you carve out the 4-6 hours a week you need for exercise, journaling, and down time. Yes, it really is that much!
2. Have the talk. You have to sit down with everyone and let them know this is important to you and get them to buy in. It’s so much harder to be successful if your family and friends aren’t behind you.
3. Remind them, nicely. Once you lose a little bit of weight and start strutting around in a new dress size the pressure will ease off for your family. This means they’ll start doing less to help you with your goals! Remind them that you’re getting there and still need a little help. Be nice, but firm. You need your time.
4. You’ll need a plan. If you’re asking your family to help you, you’re going to need a plan that you can follow so that everyone is on the same page. A calendar that everyone can see with your workouts scheduled, maybe a menu plan so people know what’s for dinner. Collaborate with your clan to set reasonable expectations.
Has anyone tried any of these techniques? Would love to get some feedback.
