You Are What You Eat

Submitted by Lisa Johnson on June 1, 2009 – 6:18 pm8 Comments

fruits-vegetablesWhat type of eater are you?  There are many definitions these days, I recently talked about being a Flexitarian as a way to lean toward vegetarianism without actually committing.  Here are some more categories, which one fits you best?

Carnivore:  Meat eaters, this means no fruits, vegetables or fiber.  Pretty much carnivore status is reserved for our four legged hunters such as wolves and lions.

Omnivore: Someone who eats both an animal and plant based diet.  In general, most humans are considered omnivores.  A little grain, a little protein, some veggies or fruit, you get the idea.

Then there is a cascade of options for the vegetarian realm, there is …

Flexitarian: A person who tries to limit their intake of meat at least one meal per week.  They will also cut down their portion size of meat when they eat it.

Pesca-Vegetarians: A person who focuses on veggies, fruits and grains but will also eat fish.  Products such as eggs and cheese are ok here.

Lacto-Ovo vegetarians:  A person who focuses on a plant based diet but will add dairy and eggs.

Lacto-Vegetarians:  Same as above but they won’t touch the eggs.

Vegans: A person who eliminates all animal products.  No meat, fish, poultry, eggs, or dairy.

Raw Foodists:  A person who eats raw food for 75% of his diet.  Based on the idea that the “living” food product has better nutrients.

Slow Foodists:  A person who eats regionally prepared foods using the traditional cooking methods which frequently take more time and care to prepare.  The antithesis of “fast food.”

Locavores:  A person who is either an omnivore or somewhere on the vegetarian spectrum who only eats food within 100 miles of their home.

So which category are you in?  Which category do you aspire to?  Are there any you want to try?  Would love any feedback.

  • First I was an omnivore, then two and a half months ago I became a pescetarian (pesca-vegetarian), then one and a half months ago I became a lacto-ovo vegetarian. With just a little locavore mixed in.

I love my new diet so much and I haven’t had a second thought. And my running has improved so much.

So when people say they’re “vegetarian,” which type do you think they’re referring to?

    Great post!

vegan high-locavore! high raw too, especially in the summer!

“flexi” is just one meatless meal a week? Umm, wow, had no idea that wasn’t normal?

  • Lisa Johnson says:

Hi Anna, actually that’s a minimum requirement by some people. In the book Flexitarian the minimum is considered two meals per week. And yup, that’s pretty easy, one night of pasta and one night of pizza would cover a whole bunch of people. The idea is to consciously choose healthy, non-meat options. Hope that clarifies a bit.

Still enjoying my continued experimentation in being a flexitarian :)

Nice! I’m a combo of omnivore, Lacto-Ovo vegetarian and a little raw. I know, it’s a mix of everything. :)

I was an omnivore and then a flexitarian. I gradually increased meatless meals over several years and currently eating a pesca-vegetarian diet. I still consider myself a flexitarian, though, because I would probably be comfortable eating meat again if I knew where it came from and how it was produced. I also try to eat mostly local. Great post!

  • Tara burner says:

Vegan and about 80-90% raw at that
