World Fitness Day ~ May 1st
Lord knows there are tons of “days” out there. Various groups try to attract a little attention by declaring a “day” and then holding some sort of festival. Sometimes it really takes off, “Earth Day” for instance, and sometimes it’s a bit of a flop. April 17th is “National Cheeseball Day;” is anyone planning to celebrate that one? Now we have World Fitness Day.
But this one has a bit of weight behind it. Jane Fonda is dusting off the leg warmers and will be leading attendees in some workouts in Atlanta on World Fitness Day. There’s been quite a push lately to get Americans to look down at their expanding waist lines and do something about it. Michelle Obama has her Let’s Move organization and Jamie Oliver is doing his Food Revolution. So if a few more celebrities pile on and get people moving I’m all for it.
Some ideas if you’d like to participate …
- Approach your school principal and the PTA to see if they’re interested in doing something at your kid’s school. It could be as simple as a little recess fun, or as extensive as a day running around in organized play outside.
- Feel free to go small and just workout that day. Just as with Earth Day, recycling one more can is a step in the right direction.
- Organize a group of buddies for a joint fitness adventure. Maybe you could grab a friend or two and hit a yoga class or just cruise around the local pond for a brisk walk. It’s up to you.
- Try something new. If you’ve been in a fitness rut it’s a good way to try something new. If you’re a gym rat, try kayaking. If you’re a runner try a dance class, something out of the norm but that appeals to you. The main goal is to have fun.
I’ll be organizing something in the Boston area. Look for a post coming soon. :-) If you’d like some ideas of new types of exercises to try check out 20 workouts in 60 days.
What would you like to do on World Fitness Day?
