Weekend Warrior: Basketball

The sport of Presidents ... Get your Weekend Warrior on

I’m starting a new section today. The Weekend Warrior. It’ll be a snarky look at activities we 9 to 5ers can do on the weekends. The goal is to have a good time and not kill ourselves!

To that end, I’m beginning with basketball. The NCAA basketball tournament is going on and perhaps you’re inspired to shoot some hoops with your friends this weekend. Here’s some things to keep in mind.

1. If you’re with a running crowd get ready for some anaerobic activity. If you’re rushing from one end of the court to the other you’re going to get winded. Do some warm up laps around the court to shake the kinks out and elevate your heart rate a bit. Maybe you just want to stick with Horse.

2. Elbows hurt, so does getting stomped on. Keep your eye on the ball and your opponent. Try not to stomp your best buddy either, at the very least you’ll owe him a pricey beer, at the worst you’ll be driving him to the ER.

3. Watch the good players for a while. If it’s been a while since you played, hang back a bit in the beginning and watch the guys who know what they’re doing. You’ll pick up a few pointers and have a better game yourself.

4. If you decide this is a good sport for you and you want to pick it up regularly. Add strength training twice a week (at a minimum) focusing on legs, back and arm strength. For added jump work think plyometrics.

Remember basketball is now the sport of Presidents (Obama’s favorite activity) you can’t do better than that.

Happy Friday, what’s your weekend warrior activity?
