TV Makes You Fat

Submitted by Lisa Johnson on June 22, 2009 – 8:44 pmOne Comment

television-staticThis seems obvious but have you really thought about it?  The average American spends about two hours a day watching TV!  What else could you be doing during that time?

There are over 3,000 studies on obesity and television, do you know how many find a correlation between the two? 2,888.  There are lots of negatives associated with TV watching …

  • Your brain becomes less active and actually shuts down the areas that help discern fact from fiction
  • You move less when watching TV than you do when reading or pretty much any other sedentary activity. Yes you actually burn a few more calories reading.
  • And the biggie, if you’re watching TV you’re missing any opportunity to be active

An article in Prevention Magazine stated.

  • The average American spends 151 hours watching TV per month.
  • You have a 23% higher risk of obesity if you watch more than 60 hours per month
  • You have a 14% higher risk of diabetes if you watch more than 60 hours per month

The next time you scratch your head about why you’ve put on a few pounds, don’t look at the scale, look at your remote.

  • Jess says:

80% of the time I can’t watch tv unless I am doing something else, be it mucking around on the computer or drawing, or even stretching and sit ups. Probably due to the countless years spend as a child watching my dad do sit ups and bolster workouts while we watch star trek, hahaha. Luckily this habit carried over into my adult life. I don’t own a tv anymore, and pretty much only watch shows on my computer as a way to wind down at night :)
