The Dirty Dozen of Fruits & Veggies

Submitted by Lisa Johnson on January 9, 2009 – 5:51 pmOne Comment

peasMany of us are confused about how to go organic.  Which food items are really important to buy organic and which not so much?  I wanted to share with you which fruits & veggies are best to put in your grocery cart. The Environmental Working Group has put together a list called, “The Dirty Dozen” for the foods which absorb the highest percentage of pesticides.  If you avoid this list you’ll eliminate over 50% of the pesticides in your diet.

They are

  1. Peaches
  2. Apples
  3. Sweet Bell Peppers
  4. Celery
  5. Nectarines
  6. Strawberries
  7. Cherries
  8. Lettuce
  9. Grapes (imported)
  10. Pears
  11. Spinach
  12. Potatoes

These foods absorb between 58% and 100% of the chemicals used to grow them! For a list of all 43 fruits and vegetables tested go here. It’s worth it to look at the whole list . . . green beans and other common fare are just outside the above and you might decide their worth adding to your organic purchases.

We’ll be adding more nutrition advice as we go.  This is a good place to get started!

Thanks,

Lisa
