The American Academy of Pediatricians has recommended certain guidelines for screen time for our kids. Screen time is the combination of TV, computer and gaming that our children engages in daily. I will tell you it’s a constant struggle at my house. Our 2nd grade son is perfectly content with a screen in front of him. Almost any screen.
Banning transfats, publishing calorie counts at fast food restaurants, banning high fructose corn syrup, revamping school lunch programs … some of these ideas have been implemented into laws in local municipalities, some of them have been adopted by food chains looking for a marketing advantage and some of them could be passed in your town sometime soon. We might even be taxed an extra 25 cents, a “sin tax” every time we reach for a twinkie or an ice cream cone.
What do you think about it? Can you legislate “fat people”? Is that even fair? Are we just creating a new level of classicism?
This is the way it’s done in the United States. People will donate to Haiti if Wyclef Jean asks them to, they’ll give to Katrina Victims if Brad Pitt flashes his baby blues. In our era of total media saturation you need a celebrity to get people’s attention. It is often the first step in a cause’s crusade these days, but it is the regular folk, like you and me, that take over and actually get things done. We are the ones who make lasting change.

Lord knows there are tons of “days” out there. Various groups try to attract a little attention by declaring a “day” and then holding some sort of festival. Sometimes it really takes off, “Earth Day” for instance and sometimes it’s a bit of a flop, April 17th is “National Cheeseball Day,” is anyone planning to celebrate that one? The food industry is starting to react towards the positive. Coca-Cola, Pepsi & Dr. Pepper have all teamed up to form a lobbying group, AmeriBev. They’ve begun running ads saying they are reducing, immediately, the number of calories in school vending machines by 88%. This is a first step, but by no means should you be throwing your hands up and shouting hallelujah …
