Michelle Obama Does Pilates!

Yay!  Michelle Obama does Pilates.  She came clean in this month’s issue of Ladies’ Home Journal.  Can I say I suspected it? She was rocking those arms last fall but then they got a bit of a softer line these past few months.  I wondered if she had started to add Pilates into her routine as that is a tell-tale sign, and lo and behold she did!

Pilates is a resistance training exercise like free weights, circuit training, a BodyPump class, or even yoga.  But there is a specific look to a “Pilates body,” one of the reasons so many celebrities do it.  Plus, it gets rid of a lot of aches and pains, back, hip, or knee troubles; it’s amazing!

OK, so I’m biased.  I’ve been teaching Pilates since 1998.  I’m addicted to it personally and it has cured my own bad back and also helped me avoid surgery on one of my knees.  It’s given me great arm definition, a butt I’m pretty happy to show off in jeans, and abs that make me happy.

So Mrs. Obama, if you’re ever in Boston, I’ll be happy to train you (and your Secret Service detail).  In fact, if you want me to come down and share an organic salad from the White House garden then give you a killer workout, I’m there.

Although the article says she and the President work out at 4:30 am so I guess it’ll be a post-workout smoothie instead.

What do you think?  Will the First Lady encourage you to try Pilates?

Let me know your thoughts.

I liked her arms better the way the were. That “softer” look just looks a little less lean to me. If Pilates does this, then I won’t try it.

Deb you are welcome to do whatever you’d like best for your body. For me, the super cut arm is a little too much and I prefer a lean, toned look that’s not as masculine. Thanks for your comments though. L–

So interesting! I gotta say, a pilates body rocks. And I’m into anything that keeps me interested, is challenging but doable, and allows me to track progress. I’m not a “natural” exerciser – I’m not tough mentally or physically, so it always takes effort to do anything. Funny, because I’ve never done pilates – I would love to work that into my activities.

Hmmmmm – too bad you’re so far away!

Kris, I used to be called hopalong catastrophe when I was a kid and now people comment from time to time about how gracefully I move. It’s all Pilates, I some managed to stop becoming a klutz and got some pretty good arms in the process. :-)

If you’re ever up in the Boston area I’d be happy to put you through a good, tough-love workout!

Well as you know I’m going back to Pilates starting this Tuesday. It’s so funny that I wrote about it and then you commented on the post and I found this post about Michelle. Small Internet world!

I’m looking forward to going back but I’m really nervous about my hips popping which they have done even when I don’t do Pilates but other floor workouts.

It would be really cool if you could go do a personal sesh with the First Lady. Dream big!

Angie that would be amazing! And thanks for checking out my blog. :-) As far as the hips popping, keep the range of motion small until you really know how to control the exercise then start to expand the range of motion. Also, try squeezing your butt hard when you’re doing the moves where hip popping might occur, sometimes this will stop it. But I know it’s pretty disconcerting! I get it sometimes too, it’s usually because I’m rushing through the exercise …
