Kayaking ~ All You Need to Know

A great upper body workout that burns calories!
Kayaking is a fun exercise that’s great to do solo or in a group. Here’s the stats …
Level of Difficulty: Easy to hard; easy if you’re paddling around a calm lake, hard if you’re shooting rapids down the Colorado River!
Calories Per Minute: 4 to 6 calories per minute. I was paddling in my own kayak, but accompanied by a dual boat with a seven-year-old, so I wasn’t able to go full speed. My 45-minute workout averaged 4 calories per minute. I burned 171 calories total. You can definitely burn more than that with a bit more effort.
Expense: My single kayak rented for $16 an hour, which was plenty of time. Purchasing kayaks can be pricey though. I would recommend this only if you are really into the sport.
Muscles Emphasized: Everything in your torso and arms, especially your shoulders, but also obliques and abdominals. Surprisingly my forearms were sore the next day from digging the paddle into the water.
Tip: This is a great family activity. Find a local body of water and rent some boats to see how you like it. Eventually, you can work your way up to river kayaking with rapids and weeklong trips in the backcountry.
