Just Get Over Yourself
Stop. Enough. Everyone is ridiculously busy. Everyone has a million interruptions every day. Everyone is tired and cranky when they get home. Enough.
Today is the day to wipe away the excuses and figure out a solution. There are lots of ways to steal minutes from your day and put them towards cooking healthy low-calorie meals and a putting in a good sweat-inducing workout. You’re eating crap and you’re sitting on your butt because you want to. Because it’s easy. Because it’s the path of least resistance.
I can point to dozens of famous people with insanely busy lives who don’t watch the 6.3 hours of television the average American does per day who get their workouts in and look fabulous on red carpets.
Turn off the TV. Put down the bag of chips. Take a deep breath. And go.
Really, it’s almost painless and it’s so worth it. Instead of being frustrated, you’ll be exalted. It’ll be that good; you’ll feel that proud.
I swear it’s worth it.
((hugs))

Love it!
I was talking (annoying) people yesterday who were whining about how they don’t have enough time in day to do anything, blah blah and I tried to explain they have plenty of time it’s that they choose not to be active – easier for them to sit & complain, watch tv, sleep, do nothing…needless to say this certain crowd didn’t appreciate it lol
Oh well, maybe one day they’ll wise up
maybe you should email them this :-)
You’re absolutely right! There are ways to get things done – it’s up to you to make it happen! Complaining does nothing! Thanks for the boost! :)
I usually agree with you and I agree with a lot of your post but not all…I used to make excuses because I’m home all day with three kids five and under and my husband doesn’t get home til 7 PM and leaves for work early in the morning. But I just stopped whining and now go at 8 PM. It’s not the greatest solution because now I see my husband less and he has to put all the kids to bed, but it was the only choice I had if I wanted to get in better shape. The only thing I disagree with is comparing us regular folks to famous people…yes famous people are busy and they still manage to work out, but…..famous people have the money and the resources to hire lots of personal training, have state of the art gym equipment at home, have help watching their kids so they can work out, and even personal chefs in some cases to cook them low fat food. Famous people, compared to the rest of us, have the least excuses to not be in shape! I have far more respect for every day people who manage to stay in shape, especially on a minimal budge, than I do for famous people! My husband works well over 50 hours per week and commutes a distance…and he’s not working out right now not bc he’s sitting around eating chips. It’s because he’s working so hard and literally by the time I get home from the gym he is half asleep! Could he get to the gym? Maybe at like 5 AM….yes, he could, but it would be a long, long day for someone who’s on the road an awful lot.
MuffinTopMommy,
Thanks for addressing your concerns. I have to say I wrote it that way because I was thinking of the Obamas. I just posted in the Michelle Obama Pilates article yesterday that she and the President get up at 4:30 am in the morning to workout. They then go, go, go all day with the responsibilities of being First Lady and President. I was thinking, Gd bless them for getting up that early to get their workouts in. Not that different from you slogging through a late night workout when that’s not the best time for you, but the time you can actually carve out.
You are, of course, right. Celebs have full-time nanny’s, cooks, live-in help, etc and they can juggle all of this much more easily than you or I could. If I got up at 4:30 am to get on my Spin bike my son, husband and the downstairs neighbors would all be glaring at me!
But the point of slipping in 10 minutes here, or 15 minutes there is doable. The other point that the average American watches 6.2 hours of TV per day is pretty valid. If you don’t watch TV you suddenly have plenty of time to exercise.
So I don’t blame you for being put out, but that’s where I was coming from. Hope it makes sense. Thanks for asking and challenging me on it. I’m happy to respond.

I can see the point about ‘famous’ people made by muffintopmommy but at same time, ‘famous’ people could easily resort to plastic surgery or other alternatives to take the ‘easy’ way out….instead they do hire trainers, etc. etc and do what has to be done.
I personally am not famous nor rich but I do get up at 5 a.m, spend time in prayer/meditation before getting my day going, then I work out, I work (for myself), I take my daughter to/from school (school starts on Monday) otherwise I play teen taxi all day, and work on new work projects, etc. etc.
When I was a personal trainer 19+ yrs ago, I’d get my now 21 yr old up at the crack of dawn, throw him asleep in car, take him to the gym and be there at 5 a.m. to get my own work outs done prior to dealing with customers and then the duties of being a single mom back then… Now he’s grown but I’m still single mom to teen (have been single mom 20 yrs of the last 21)
But, like you said Lisa… grab even 10 mins. of doing something active in the day…that’s totally feasible and doable for anyone. And, do away with tv and that frees up A LOT of time.
If you can’t afford ‘home gym’ equipment, check out CraigsList, there’s always something on there! I picked up an excellent stair stepper for $120! There are ways…just have to be willing to accommodate them if you want it enough :)
Yes yes yes!!! A topic that is so dear to me (and I’ve heard this from so many people who’ve seen me lose weight over the years while I’ve balanced 3-5 contract jobs at the same time)…
Those who have trouble fitting in exercise: if you have a Netflix subscription, you can rent exercise videos, as well. This way, you don’t have to have extra time to get to the gym, or be limited to when the kids are in school, etc.
There are also several reputable websites (think major fitness magazines) who have short videos of exercises that you can perform at home, as well. And I know several friends who’ve recently used Craigslist (at least here in Seattle) to buy gym-quality treadmills, stairclimbers, etc for $50 and under.
See, the options truly *do* exist! :)
Thanks Brooke for contributing to this, all excellent ideas! And congrats on your weight loss and maintenance …
