I found myself on the phone recently saying, “Look, I know all about Pilates. I know how to tell you to suck in your abs … What I don’t know is the technical thingy you’re talking about. At all. So how do we fix this?” Getting my fitness DVDs from dream to reality (at least the final step from final edit to tangible product) was a bit more than I bargained for.
I probably sounded really stressed out and close to tears during the above phone call. Also, I’ve noticed that when you talk in that tone of voice, people do whatever needs to be done to make sure you don’t totally lose it. The good news is now I know all about audio and the audio systems used over the past 15 years of DVD production. Go ahead, just ask me … Although I warn you, you’ll likely be bored to tears.
Developing a fitness DVD takes a lot of front-end work (prepping the choreography, getting my butt smaller, etc.), a lot of work the day of the shoot (six hours of working out!), and a TON of post-production work (marketing plans, web site development, photo shoots, PR, social media, and the dreaded wrangling with the production house that will actually produce the actual fitness DVDs.)
Our Fitness DVDs are Now On Sale!
I’m happy to say we’re done! My two fitness DVDs are on their way (we’ll have ’em next Tuesday the 11th) and pre-orders start today! We will be shipping all pre-orders next Wednesday, in plenty of time for Christmas. This part … getting from the day of filming to a DVD I can hold in my hands … was the most foreign part of the process to me and where I learned a lot. I have a pretty good handle on the work flow now, and I’m familiar with marketing and PR because I’ve been doing it with my Pilates studio for so long. So the sales process is me moving back into familiar territory.
Phew! This has been quite a ride and I realize the pre-launch is nothing compared to what the launch will be. I’m already reaching out to distributors, fitness stores (for appearances), direct sales to retail locations, setting up an affiliate program, and putting the final final touches on our websites that will be promoting the videos. January is going to be a really busy month!
This is my little “calm before the storm” moment right now. I get a breather for a few days and then it all gets really exciting and probably a little bit crazy. I’m really looking forward in anticipation at what’s to come. I feel in my gut it’s gonna be good. I can’t wait to get there!
