The headline above sounds like something straight out of The Onion, but Michele Obama is helping to set a world record for jumping jacks today. Yes, it’s not exactly what it seems; the first lady is not decked in sweats in the Oval Office doing jumping jacks until she breaks the record or crumples in exhaustion (although wouldn’t that be pretty cool).
As part of Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative to get kids moving and help to fight childhood obesity, today’s record-breaking attempt is looking to get at least 20,000 people to do jumping jacks for at least one minute before 3:00 pm Eastern today (the attempt started yesterday at three o’clock). In fact, she’s already done her part having gathered hundreds of school children on the South Lawn of the White House to add their numbers to the attempt. (fast forward to the 42 minute mark for the attempt)
Of course, no one is going to shed pounds by doing just 60 seconds of any exercise; you’d barely burn off a baby carrot that way. The point of today’s record-breaking attempt is to again raise awareness that kids need to be active in order to live a healthy lifestyle. The message was pushed to classrooms nationwide by National Geographic Kids which partnered with Mrs. Obama.
So why not get up from your chair right now and rip off a quick minute of jumping jacks. Even if you don’t submit your name to be part of the record, you’re doing your own little part for a healthier you. Perhaps you could even consider taking regular breaks throughout your day for some quick calisthenics, because any movement is good movement.
Good luck reaching the record!
