Jack LaLanne was amazing. The reason why you work out today is because of Jack LaLanne. At the ripe old age of 96 he has passed away. I’d like to take a moment to mark the occasion and pay proper tribute.
Do you know that he invented Muscle Beach in Venice, CA? Arnold Schwarzenegger would have had nowhere to hang his hat if Jack hadn’t been around.
He became famous because he used to train his wife with weights! Back then it was commonly believed that if women did weight training they would become infertile. (Really, I’m not making this up!)
Jack and his wife proved them all wrong and they opened the first of a group of fitness studios the forerunner of todays health clubs. Yup, Jack opened the first of what is now modern fitness.
His fitness show on television was the first of its kind. He wore his unassuming blue jumpsuit so you could see his form and focus on the movement, not on him. His onscreen presence was the beginning of visual fitness. Without Jack you’d have no Jane Fonda, no Tae Bo, no “Biggest Loser.”
He tried to reach out to women in their homes by creating a series of exercise records and packaging them with what was essentially a lazy susan for women to stand on and move to as he guided them through workouts.
He had health clubs, a TV show, a product in stores; imagine what he could have done with today’s technology?
I wouldn’t be in the fitness industry if it wasn’t for Jack, “the Godfather of Fitness.” I tip my hat to you Jack. I truly appreciate all that you’ve done and the path you created for so many to follow.
Thank you. If you have a Jack LaLanne story, please share it. I’d love, love to hear them.
