This weekend we “fall back” from daylight savings time. I’m going to suggest you donate that time, not to slumber, but to an extra workout!
I know the idea of “free” sleep is enticing, but think about the bonus calories you can earn by working out instead. Just a few ideas include …
- 625 to 700 calories burned from jogging
- 400 to 700 calories from Spinning
- 270 to 350 calories from yoga
You get the idea. And let me take away some excuses you might try and use now that it’s getting dark out earlier …
Street lights and reflective gear. If you’re an outdoor exerciser, you can still head out after the sun dips below the horizon. Just make sure you’ve got reflective gear on and you’re in well-lit areas. You can also shift longer workouts to the weekends and think about becoming an early riser with quick morning workouts.
Cool air is great for exercise. Maybe the idea of a roaring fire and hot chocolate is more appealing, but cooler air is better for exercise. For many people, there is less pollen in the air, the humidity is gone, and that means you can breathe a whole lot better. You might actually find your performance improving in the cooler months.
Tap the fall productivity boost. Maybe it’s just mental, but I always have more energy in the fall. The lazy summer days are far gone and I roll up my sleeves and get to work with my clients. You can apply that same attitude to your workouts, just use a little gumption and try a new fitness activity or set a goal. You’ll be happily pleased with the results.
So join me in setting this small goal. Promise yourself an extra hour of exercise on Sunday, and tell me below what you’re going to do. Me? I’ll be hooping this Sunday. I’ve been rusty lately and I need to start working on a few new tricks, so the extra hour will give me a good start. What are you doing?
Cheers,
Lisa

I’ll be doing same thing I do every day…
running
yoga
or weights
“falling back” doesn’t mean anything to me…
I’m up early daily no matter what…
to much to do and experience to waste on sleep! :)
Good for you Tara … :)
Great idea! I do like working out in the cooler weather better! Does jogging really burn 625-700 calories an hour?? It seems like everything I’ve read puts it in a lower range…This is great news!
Thanks Jessica! :-)
