Daniella, it sounds like your Mom raised you with a lot of strength and you got to know about a secret that a lot of people don't learn about until much later. Probably was great for your body image! I do know enough photoshop to be dangerous and once you learn the tricks they're easy to spot in magazines, etc. Thanks for telling us a bit more of your story. Today is Mother's Day, so I'm sending a little Happy Mother's Day wish to your Mom's memory. Peace. L--

Well, she's gone now, hence the reason for saying 'use to', she was a photo retoucher. If you saw the before pictures, she could take them home to work on them, if it was an 'emergency', you would freak out, but the after pictures were gorgeous. She would spend hours, literally, making waists thinner, moles/acne/wrinkles disappear, it's just such a phony world, it really bothered me to see them in person, not recognise them, most of the time, then they appear on some cover and were instantly 'hot', lol.

What bothers me is how women 'think' they look like this, when the reality of it is so far from the truth. Men know the difference more then women, which I suppose is your point of 'body envy'. It's much easier today with photo shop, to do what my Mom use to do, but there you have it, that's what she did.

I hated going to the studios with her since 'anyone' we came across would always tell her to get me into acting or modeling, lol, yeah, like I'd go for it, no way was I going to be a party to any of that life style.

Curlsz thanks so much for saying the Lululemon club, I had to laugh. I agree with everything you said except the sneakers. Always buy the best you can afford and try to get them fitted properly. Once you find a style that works for you, you can search on line for better deals, but you need to know the first pair will work for you. You can mess up ankles, knees, lower back, etc. with a bad pair of sneaks! Make sure they fit well. :-) But yes, ratty T shirts (if that's all you have) shouldn't stay in the way of a good workout.

Oh, I'd add one other thing, especially for the bigger topped girls. Buy the best sports bra you can afford too! Stretch marks aren't fun. L--

Colleen, thanks for your insight, I hear you. I would say you don't necessarily need money to be fit, but you do need energy and time and that can be hard to scrape together when you're a working Mom, especially hard if you're a single Mom. L--

Thanks for stopping by Brooke, I find I'll do both. A little sparkly in the beginning for motivation and another little sparkly for a reward at the end. :-) I can easily be bribed! L--

Considering that more women then men take primary responsibility for children, day and night, sick and well, whether parents are married or single and considering that woman tend to make less money than men I think it is highly likely that there are a lot of women too tired and too poor to workout. Working in community health care with babies and young children I see this often.

I don't mind investing in classes or trainers or even my gym membership - when it comes to quality facilities it's great - but I have to say workout clothing is a big cost that if you don't have the money to spend on it you shouldn't feel like you can't hang with the rest of the Lulemon club. Some of those places are just brand name ticket prices - you can shop for shoe sales - or go to online shoe places - you can shop sale items in clothing stores or stick to the basics - you'll sweat no matter what brand you're wearing. It's all about movement and health that's the eye on the prize!!! So honestly if you have to budget, then remember people were healthy and fit long before Stella McCartney started making workout clothes and long before $150 yoga pants were in fashion.

Cool post Lisa! I am also motivated to workout if I try a new class, get a new pair of shoes, or purchase new running gear. However, I try to limit my expenses by only rewarding myself with these items after I have reached a goal.

Katie you sound like you're way ahead in your knowledge base than I was at your age. College can be tougher to eat well than high school, there's less structure, a lot of self-study which can really mess up your eating! Keep being aware and making little adjustments and you'll be just fine. Thanks for stopping by. :-)

Doug, I thought the same thing ... so it's interesting, maybe all the guys have gyms in their basements ;-) Something to keep an eye on though. OR ... maybe men lied more during the study.
