Bridal Fitness: Chelsea Clinton Shows Us How

Submitted by Lisa Johnson on August 2, 2010 – 1:17 pm2 Comments

Chelsea Clinton looked amazing this weekend in her couture Vera Wang gown.  She looked radiant and happy and I hope she thoroughly enjoyed her day.

She also highlights what’s “in” for brides these days as her pics get plastered all over the globe.  I work with brides regularly and I can tell you there is a certain look that changes over time.

Thin is in. Brides are always worried about their weight but with celebrity weddings looming as comparison lots of brides really push to be as thin as possible.   This requires lots of cardio and really watching what you eat.  Be ready to put in time on the cardio equipment if you want to get as thin as Chelsea.  She’s never had a weight problem but she seemed a bit thinner than usual for her nuptials.

Toned arms rule. It’s unlikely a bride will be wearing sleeves these days.  Even in winter weddings, bride after bride walks the aisle in strapless creations.  This means toned arms are crucial.  You’ll need light weights and high reps to get the Hollywood arms that brides are sporting these days.

Fitted bodice means flat abs. If you’ve got a fitted bodice like Chelsea you’re going to need crunches and lots of ‘em. Add Kegels to your ab routine to really flatten out the lower abs and lose any traces of muffin top.  I am biased towards Pilates because it’s a great way for abs to get in shape; my studio specializes in “scooped out” abs.

You can cheat your bum. With a fitted bodice comes a flared skirt.  A nice A-line is forgiving in the hips and butt and you can get away with a little less work here.  But if you’re planning a tropical vacation for your honeymoon, you’ll be lunging and squatting until you can’t take it anymore to make sure those honeymoon pics look smashing.

Those are the basics for getting fit for “the dress.”  Remember the pictures of your wedding day are likely to be displayed for years.  Give yourself a month lead time for every five pounds you’re trying to lose.

Let me know your tips for getting in shape for your wedding.

In the lead-up to my wedding 8 years ago I was taking 2 Pilates sessions a week and really watching what I ate – I wanted to feel relaxed and calm and have the best skin ever!

A very kind ‘friend’ warned me that I would regret it: apparently I was going to look at those skinny wedding pics for the rest of my life and be miserable about being fatter than I was on that day.

Well, I’ve rarely been over my wedding weight since, and I’m probably slightly slimmer now. I think I made the right choices back then. I wanted to feel great and counter the wedding stress as much as possible, losing some weight was a side benefit really. What I gained was a few really good habits for looking after myself that continue to have long-term benefits :-)
