Some of us make ‘em. Some of us don’t. But either way, it’s a good idea to give yourself a clean slate for 2012.
I really love January 1st. I get a chance to renew myself, to use this body and this mind to set new challenges. As much as some people poo-poo them, I LOVE New Year’s resolutions. I take the changing of the calendar as an opportunity to improve myself a little bit, and I’m good enough at goal setting that I usually do meet my resolutions. I keep ‘em small and manageable, that’s the real trick of them.
But the grand scope of January 1st begs for big dreams, lofty goals, and soaring ambitions. Whether it’s with your body, your marriage, your job, anything seems possible, doesn’t it?
So even if you don’t do resolutions, how about a clean slate?
What do you want to do that makes a mark in 2012? Chris Brogan always talks about his three words; I picked it up last year and came up with “Thrive, Lithe, and Relax.” Thrive was for my business and it did thrive; I completely revamped my business from top to bottom and it’s grown by 40% since I did. Lithe was for me and my body, and while I am thinner and more toned, I’m still not where I want to be; a partial victory, I guess. Relax was to try to stop stressing so much about, well, everything. I had some success there too; a two-week trip to Costa Rica was one of the best my family has ever had and I also had an amazing yoga retreat to Cartagena, Colombia, a vibrant city I loved visiting. But I still stress a lot when I’m at home, so I gotta work on that. I guess another partial victory.
I know I’m further along than I was, and if I hadn’t stopped to think about those three words, I would have said no to some opportunities that came my way. I also wouldn’t have kept the focus on my business the way I needed to. The word thrive became a mantra to me last year and it served me well.
You can join me and Chris and come up with your own three words this year. Or you can just think about a way you’d like to shift your life a bit; it doesn’t even have to be a defined goal as much as adopting a certain vibe.
What are my three words for 2012? Grow (for my Pilates studio and my digital media business), Laugh (to remind myself to enjoy life a little more), and Love (for my body, to love moving). I can’t wait to get started. I’ll see you on Monday and we can start 2012 together.
What do you want to do in 2012? Please tell me, I’d love to hear. If you’ve got three words or a specific goal or a general attitude, please post it below.
