5 Tips to Have Fun During Your Workout

How to have a blast at your next workout!

Gray ratty sweats, gray rainy day, same old same old on the iPod.  You. Just. Don't. Want. To. Exercise! Here are five tips for having fun during your next workout. Set an "I rock" goal! Pick a rock star move you've been wanting to do and do it. Sprint up that hill at breakneck speed.  Or increase the weight you lift by 10% on the leg press and push out those reps with gusto.  Try your usual pushups but on a BOSU or Styrofoam roller so you're really feeling your core as well as your arms, chest, and back.  Pick a usual activity or a secret "wanna do" and go for it!  Pat yourself heartily on the back when you're done. Update your music. I get into this rut a lot; I'm just so sick of the "gym shuffle" mix that I could, well, skip my workout.  Take your newest upbeat CD and load it to your iPod or download some new tunes from your favorite music source.  Don't overlook Pandora; type in "workout" and you'll get lots of mixes to follow, some by famous artists who share their own workout jams.  Then you can pretend you're Usher as you groove along to your workout. Get some cool duds.  Maybe it's an inspirational T-shirt, new sneakers, or a sports bra that actually fits (you know who I'm talking to ...).  I always feel extra sassy with a new pair of workout pants and an oh-so-hip tee.  Spiff yourself up a bit and you'll feel inspired during your exercise routine. Intervals! Okay, you're rolling your eyes; you don't believe me, but intervals are a blast!  Get your inner warrior on and chug as hard as you can for 60 to 120 seconds.  Push yourself and feel how amazingly strong you are!  Feel smug knowing that you're torching calories and will be in your skinny jeans in no time. Go with a friend! What could be better?  Hook up with a friend and pound out a grueling workout together.  Try to pick someone who's competitive so you won't just be "pretending" to do crunches and chatting about your love life.  Call your jockiest friend and challenge them to a little friendly competition.  You'll have a blast egging each other on and you can celebrate with a skinny latte and salad afterward. Do you have any tips for enjoying your workout?  I'd love to hear 'em.  If you'd like a peak behind the blog, sign up for our newsletter in the upper right hand column.  I send along extra tips and motivational kicks in the behind to make sure you are the best "you" possible.  :-) Here are some more ideas for mixing up your workout. Great post!..You need to be looking after your body as you build muscle and lose fat. There is important things you have to catch up on, so you know exactly what your body can take. This will keep you on schedule when it comes to the competitions.

Although I’ll have to take your word on the sports bra ( :) ), I think these tips are spot on. I am a big fan of intervals, and I know if I can just commit myself to completing that first 30-60 second burst that I’ll have no problem continuing and finishing up my routine.

It helps that I generally workout in or near my home, and all of my routines are 30 minutes or less (many are less than 15 minutes), so it doesn’t seem so onerous to get it done. However, it also makes it extra easy to procrastinate and get sucked into other stuff around my house.

I’ll keep your tips in mind during these weak moments!

Oh, and my favorite workout partner (when we can) is obviously my wife.

Dustin, thanks so much for stopping by and I’m glad you like the interval training ideas. If you psyche yourself up for it they can be a blast. And yes, I agree with you, I have the procrastination bug and I’m always stopping myself from working to, um, enjoy life. I’m really glad you stopped by, I had a big smile on my face when I saw your comment.

Lisa – These are great tips and I agree with all of them! I just spent time organizing my lists and iPod yesterday and I can’t wait to head out tonight! Friend? Yes! Intervals? Yes! (Way less boring too – breaks up the time in a great way.) Variations of the same stuff? Yes! Swiss ball, medicine ball… you name it!

For the duds? OK – so you’ve given me permission to pick up a few new pieces – thank you Lisa ;-)

I love these tips! Unlike most blogs… they are actually tips I can use (not ones I’ve heard over & over & ooooover again!).

My “I rock!” goal is to have toned arms for my wedding! I want to show up on my wedding day feeling strong, confident and in good health! It’s funny because if you would have asked me a couple months ago, my answer would have been “I want to be thin on my wedding day”

Thank GOSH I now value health over vanity!

Leanne, congrats on your wedding and your healthy attitude. That sounds perfect. Also, check out my video on “hollywood arms” I make all my brides do it and it only takes about 3 minutes a day. I swear you won’t want to hold the flowers because your arms will look so fabulous!

Update on mixing it up: Suzanne @workoutnirvana and I swapped workouts – she’s a weight lifter & I’m a high rep/low weight girl. We’re both fit and well-trained, so we gave it a go. I can’t tell you how much fun it was to get out of our comfort zone & challenge the same muscles in new ways. Woot!

I love articles that write about how to make working out FUN. Most people do boring routines and who would stay motivated doing this? I know I don’t. It’s good to change things up and try some intervals as you suggest. I also really enjoy ladders for a change of the norm. Do you?

If you’d like I just wrote about this topic before stumbling on your post. Great minds think alike ;-). Or maybe I just felt your mind and you rubbed off on me.

    Have Fun Working Out.
