5 Goals For Fitness Bloggers
I’m a fitness blogger. There. I said it. I’m a fitness blogger. Phew, that felt good actually…should have done that sooner. I have been writing haphazardly about fitness for the last 18 months or so and I’ve actually been a professional blogger for AOL’s That’s Fit since September ’09. I’ve committed to writing posts every weekday for the last couple of months. I wasn’t sure if I could keep up the pace, but it turns out I can and I actually love it. I love getting good information out to my readers and turning people on to living better. My slogan is “Everything for a Healthy Body” and I mean it.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what’s the most important thing I can convey. I’d like to share my goals for this blog and I’d love other fitness bloggers to throw their two cents in. It would be wonderful to see this turn into a lively discussion on how we affect our readers’ lives. Here’s what I think our goals should be:
Be Inspiring
We have a readership that looks to us for fitness and health advice. I think first and foremost we must be inspiring to others. We’re upbeat, kind, helpful and friendly. We try to set an example for others to follow but we admit we’re human when we don’t quite meet our own goals. We try to do the right thing, just like everyone else.
Be Truthful
Our readers come to trust us because they can interact with us in the comment section or via social media. I am honored that people look to me for fitness advice. I want to do right by them and not “fluff” the facts or lead them astray. I will always strive to be truthful and provide accurate answers to tough questions.
Honor our Readers’ Health
Our readers trust us and will do what we say when they ask our advice. We must respect that and borrow from the Hippocratic Oath, “First do no harm.” Make sure what you put out is worthy of being read.
Debunk Myths
There are so many hucksters in the fitness industry and it’s our job to expose the liars as nothing more than two-bit salesmen trying to make a buck. The contraptions, gizmos, and dietary supplements that either do nothing, waste people’s money or might actually harm them. We should be obligated to expose these myths when we come across them so our readers can steer clear.
Honor Ourselves
We each have a unique voice in our chosen genre of blogs. The Mom who successfully lost weight and kept it off. The gym rat who wants to show people the right way to lift. The holistic person who wants to show their readers that every choice is connected to their health. Or the pros in the health clubs and Pilates or Yoga studios who just want to give people good information. We need to honor our voice and speak from what we know. It will resonate with some and they’ll become our regular readers.
Ultimately we hold people’s lives in our hands (our keyboards?) as we dole out tidbits of information. The right article could literally save someone’s life. The wrong article could lead to injury or worse. I would love your feedback on my lofty goals. :-)

Lisa,
Thanks or this post. I’ve been strongly considering creating a second blog (the one on my biz website is very technical), one that is more inspirational to others, sharing the lessons I’ve learned and my stories in losing almost 100 pounds… and not always keeping all of them off, but being in a good place right now. Your post has reminded me that I really need to start my second blog!
Lisa,
Do you know what is really cool? It’s the fact that your goals are reflected in every part of your blog: content, design, etc. I think any of your loyal readers could write that post for you because your goals shine through in an authentic way.
Thanks for the inspiration.
Wow Brooke, that’s amazing, 100 pounds! You should definitely start a 2nd blog and I’d be happy to help you get it set up. Just let me know how I can help. L–
Susan, thanks so much for saying that, I actually welled up … :-) I really try to write from my heart and it’s nice to see the message is coming through.
Well, ok, sometimes I’m kinda snarky … maybe really snarky … ;-)
Lisa
great list! i need to be more consistent in my posting. you are definitely an inspirational fitness blogger!
consistency is definitely the hardest part, I struggle with that almost every week! Lisa
Great list, Lisa! These are all things I agree with! Especially the part about being inspiring. Something I look for when reading new blogs is inspiration, so it only makes sense that I want my own blog to inspire others.
thanks so much Janetha for your comments :-) I really appreciate it.
